If I am approved for an unpaid leave of absence, what happens to my position? Will I be considered a new hire when I return?

Note: This help topic is out of date and currently archived.

Staff who are approved for an unpaid leave of absence (e.g. child rearing) will have their position at their school or office declared a vacancy, so there is no guarantee that staff will get the same position back when they return to work. While you will not be considered a new hire, you will be considered a return-from-leave teacher or staff member. You will be placed before new hires or transfers in the surplus and return-from-leave process.

Staff who receive leave covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) can receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. It also requires that their group health benefits be maintained during the leave.
